Gabriel Fierros

Senior Associate

My name is Gabriel Fierros and I was born and raised in Marengo, a small town in northern Illinois. I joined the Army in June 1998, right after my high school graduation. I was medically retired in May 2009. I am married, we have one little boy and currently reside in Long Pond, PA.

I deployed to Iraq three times during my service. My first deployment began in 2003. I was injured by a grenade explosion during a riot on Highway 8 near Baghdad. I received a shrapnel wound to my leg and stayed in country to heal. After thirty days, I continued my tour.

My third deployment to Iraq began in 2006. I was injured in a helicopter crash 20 miles outside of Baghdad. I received additional shrapnel injuries and wounds to my left eye and nasal passages. I was sent to Walter Reed Medical Center in DC for 7 months of treatment, during which time I was diagnosed with a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

After treatment at Walter Reed, I was sent back to my post in Alaska and placed in a Warrior Transition Unit to continue my care until I was medically retired from the Army. Once retired, I worked in Anchorage, Alaska as a contractor for the Army until March 2012. Then I relocated to northeast Pennsylvania and took a federal position with Tobyhanna Army Depot.

I initially heard about WWIA from one of the guys in my unit. My first trip was duck hunting in southwestern Ohio. It was relaxing to be around like minded people that understood my experiences and the level of camaraderie was just what I needed.

I would like to thank John and Wounded Warriors in Action for inspiring me to get involved and spread the word about this great cause.
