2016 Testimonials

January 2016 NC OBX

This is one of the few moments I’ve encountered where people actually cared of what I have done in my service to the Marine Corps. The other Heroes are great to be around. A big shout out to Wounded Warriors in Action for coordinating all this and making this trip fun. I will pass on the knowledge and comraderies I have experienced here. Have a happy and fruitful new year!

The WWIA experience is amazing. It is run with the highest standards, with the emphasis on having a good time. It is also one of the healthiest environments any soldier can be in. It is a total package for PTSD therapy. You are surrounded by people that care and understand what we have been through. It is by far the most honest and caring non-profit organization. This experience has changed me, and I will never forget this experience. Oh, and duck hunting is a blast!

As life develops we all experience different things. In military life this is very true depending on your unit, MOS, and position. I have personally found some very rough experiences within the military to date. I can’t compare this to any other story, but I can say that it has been a struggle. WWIA has shown me that there are folks in America and there are people that still truly care about our Armed Forces. This duck hunt in OBX, NC with the Foundation has proven that to me. I have never seen so much Patriotism and true kindness to the military than I have on this trip. I want to say Thank you and that this trip is not forgotten. The friendships, bonds, stories, and ducks we killed cannot be lost in my mind. I felt like one of the team and had a blast! I recommend WWIA to anyone that can make a trip! It was Amazing!!! My deepest thanks!

This is my 3rd year attending the Currituck Duck Hunt event in N.C. and once again, the people donating and hosting this event have topped last year. I have met some really great guys and continue to see guys attending their first event open up and enjoy themselves. WWIA is a great organization and continues to provide great events and opportunities for guys to build lasting friendships and continue healing.

January 2016 MD Duck & Goose

Absolutely fantastic experience. I could not imagine a more amazing group of people than the ones I got to meet on this hunt. Even with the less desirable weather to begin the hunt, the guys kept everyone motivated and ready until Mother Nature finally cooperated. It was great to be able to get away from the stresses of work for a few days and spend it with these awesome folks. I cannot express how grateful I am that I was able to attend this event. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for the opportunity to hunt duck, geese and pheasant. This was my first trip with WWIA and it was an awesome experience. This trip is something I will never forget.

-R. Ochoa, US Army
Purple Heart Recipient

This was my first time duck and goose hunting and it was beyond my expectations. We shot so many birds, from mallards and geese to pheasants and chukars. Watching all the guys call in the birds and seeing the dogs work and retrieve the birds was a sight to see! The host, Brian, and the rest of the crew, Tim, Gabe, Jr., Chip and so many more were outstanding in their hunting knowledge and treated me like family. The generosity in this organization is amazing. Thank you so much for everything—WWIA is outstanding!

-K. Segundo, US Navy

Thank you so very much for this once in a lifetime experience. The generosity and hospitality was fantastic. It humbles me to know that there are such wonderful people in this great country. The dogs, the birds, the company are all top notch. WWIA made this whole trip absolutely epic!

January 2016 SW Ohio Waterfowl

The hosts Dan Doll, Dave “Stu” Studenka, and Don and John Hagwood were excellent hosts and die-hard waterfowlers. These guys bent over backwards and put a lot of hard work into making this event the success it was. I can’t tell them thank you enough. I’m still in awe of the amount of waterfowl experienced. Can’t wait to see everyone again. You guys rock!!

-J. French, US Army
Purple Heart Recipient

Thank you for the opportunity to join this trip. So far everyone has been very warm and understanding. We went out this morning to set up and before we could finish, the sky turned black with waterfowl. It was just an amazing thing to see. Regardless of how much fun it was to hunt ducks and geese, the staff and people were great to be around. Everyone who sponsored this trip was a blast to talk to and hang out with. All in all, I had a great time and hope that I can do it again sometime. Thank you again for this opportunity!

-J. Biggerstaff, US Army
Purple Heart Recipient

Thank you so much for this opportunity! I’ve had such a “blast” out there! From the moment I met all the guys, I didn’t even care if we’d gotten any waterfowl. Just hanging out with everyone was all worth it. It’s hard to explain how much this experience means, and how much the guys who are here mean to me. The guys are awesome, and it was so easy to connect with them. This was the first time I’ve ever waterfowl hunted, and it was most likely the best hunt I will ever have.

January 2016 Russell AL Deer

I had the best experience. This was my first time hunting anything other than a bird. I wasn’t so lucky until the second and third evenings when I finally saw a four-point buck, three does and a button buck. This trip has been a blessing. Not only did I get to relax in the country with some very wonderful people, they also taught me to hunt and gave me the full hunting experience. I have met and made some wonderful friends and hope to keep in touch. Godspeed and best wishes to all involved.

-C. Beck, US Army

Having the opportunity to be a part of WWIA and being able to join the Alabama trip has been an amazing, once in a lifetime experience. February 2016 Woodturning

I had a great time at the event! I did some woodturning in high school and Tony and Bob were great teachers, so it came right back to me and I learned so much more. I made so many things in the few days I was there. It really was a great event because people who have never done woodturning before would be able to learn something they didn’t know they could ever do. I’m staying in contact with Tony so I can continue to do it throughout the year. Overall it was an amazing event and the people were great.

-J. Bentley, USMC
Purple Heart Recipient

Oh wow! That was absolutely amazing. Tony was a fantastic instructor and was one of the most generous hosts. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at his home and four wonderful days of turning wood. Two of the plates that I turned now have WWIA logos on them and will be sent to John for his use. Thank you for this fantastic week. I enjoyed the course with John and the instructors. Thank you again and I will now be providing Carvings for WWIA.

I myself have greatly enjoyed being part of the KS Cast and Blast. Leading an event for the first time was. Little nerve racking at first, but once everyone showed up my nerves were calmed. This is an excellent event. The whole community welcomed us with open arms. I could not have had any better times and memories. I can see by this event that I am not alone. I’m not the only vet that has had trouble, and how there are great people across this nation that support us, the vets. I have made many memories and hopefully lifelong friends on this event.

-D. Icenhower, US Army

The experience was amazing. The care and support we were shown was outstanding. Spending time with other wounded vets and feeling like I’m not alone in my struggles was therapeutic. The whole experience has been beyond what I could have imagined. Thank you so much WWIA!!

-J. Cushman, US Army

I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. From the travel to the host, everything was laid back, stress-free and definitely a memory that will live in my mind forever. I think if the same standard is maintained here, any veteran would be lucky to go on this trip.

April 2016 Port Aransas TX Inshore

This opportunity was amazing. Far more than I could have ever conceived. Being able to get away from life for a few days and just hang out with awesome people doing the things we all wish we had more time to experience was and is going to stay a memorable experience for me. From hanging out with the locals to catching fish I read about, to learning the history of the town were all high points for me. Thank you all for this event and the thought that went into it.

-D. Shreve, US Army

This experience is really what I needed. Every single person I met made me feel welcomed and comfortable. The atmosphere everywhere was awesome, not to mention all the fish we caught. The storytelling and guitar playing was on point. I don’t think I had a single issue and the history part just completes this experience. Thanks for everything.

We cannot express our gratitude for your generous donation to make this hunt possible for us. It was an absolute once in a lifetime experience that will never be forgotten by either of us. We were both able to harvest great bears and meet some of the best folks we have ever had the pleasure to meet in the McMann’s. It is because of people like you that the WWIA can continue their amazing mission to help Purple Heart recipients heal. Thank you so much for your generosity.

May 2016 W PA Turkey

What a great trip! I appreciate everything that everyone has done for me. Dan and his family were AWESOME! A great host and an awesome camp. We were always relaxed and had great conversations. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. Jeremy taught me a lot about PA and PA hunting. It’s always nice to learn new parts of the country—he’s a great person to represent WWIA. Although there were no turkeys harvested, I had an exceptional time during my visit. Great food, atmosphere, conversations, but most of all, great AMERICANS!

May 2016 Dave Harris Memorial Billfish Tournament

The 3rd year is in the books and once again I’m worn out and revitalized at the same time. I’m so fortunate to be blessed with the opportunities this Foundation has given me. The relationships I have built are lifelong and so meaningful to me. All of these Heroes have sacrificed so much more than me, but they are so strong and very capable. Their resolve is inspiring! I draw strength from them and find comfort that their love of country is as strong as mine. Many thanks to the Harris family, Bob and Glenna and everyone that made this happen, especially the WWIA! God Bless.

-M. Broda, USAF

This tournament is one of the things that I look forward to the most all year. The things that WWIA does at the DHMBT are amazing for my morale. The Harris family and this entire group make all of the Wounded Warriors feel like family and include us in everything that they do. I cannot thank the WWIA Foundation enough for bringing me on this trip and introducing me to these lifelong friends. Thank you!

-R. Kusch, US Army

WWIA has done it again. I forgot that I have PTSD. I found peace in my everyday life. The amount of brotherhood that has transpired since we have been here is overwhelming. I haven’t been this happy in a long time. Working away from my family has been so hard but coming to this makes me feel like I am around my family again.

Everyone and everything was just so wonderful. The hospitality shown was beyond and above. We have had a great stay. Julie and Brad, thanks or opening up your home to us. We really appreciate everything, Buck and Kim everyone for your hospitality and we just say thanks again.

This weekend was a great time. To meet other combat wounded vets and their family, it was great to hear their experiences and struggles as I did. Just to be around great people with open arms, everyone that understands you and some of the things you’ve been though not just the combat wounded but our spouses. This helped them know that we aren’t the only ones doing and going through what we go through and provide a better understanding. I thank WWIA for providing us with this opportunity and would love to stay a part of this association. I can’t thank Brad, Julie and Buck and Kim enough but thank you again.

The Inaugural Ohio Turkey Hunt was an outstanding event. Above all Jim Kailburn and his family and friends were incredible. You couldn’t have asked for nicer people. Though we didn’t get a turkey, it was great to get away for the weekend and unwind in a beautiful area. It was fun. I hope we do it again.

May 2016 Manitoba Black Bear

This was my first time visiting Canada. What a beautiful country. Through extreme generosity and caring people, I was able to go on the hunt of my dreams! The first night in the stand, it seemed all of the planets aligned. After sitting for a while, Derek said, “Within the hour we are going to see bear.” About three minutes later, a beautiful mature black bear came from behind us. We waited to see how she measured against the barrel. She was bigger! The right moment presented itself and the first shot was perfect! I have now accomplished a huge feat on my bucket list. I am so grateful and truly thankful for this opportunity. Derek is a phenomenal person and will always be considered family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all who were involved and helped a dream of mine come true.

May 2016 WI C & B

A great group of guys from around the country got together to share a passion, talk about their military service, challenges now and then and were able to relax/breathe in Central Wisconsin’s lakes and woods. It still amazes me how easy and natural it is to just “click” with other service members from all parts of the country/service branches/MOS’s. Todd, Tony and Mike were the bonding facilitators. They were excellent! Great and generous people as well as American patriots. Can’t say thanks enough!

-J. French, US Army

I had a blast! The hosts were amazing. The accommodations were outstanding. It was everything I thought it would be and more! I would love to do this event again. Thank you for the opportunity to meet and hunt with fellow warriors.

-D. Holt, US Army

Awesome weekend! Since I came home I lead a very secluded life. It was very nice to be around other combat vets who have been there. I really appreciate everything Wounded Warriors in Action has done for me. I am really looking forward to more, hopefully. Frenchy was awesome. Great communication and really made sure we were getting the most out of the weekend. Thanks for are you guys do! I am hugely grateful.

-S. Solie, US Army
Purple Heart Recipient

It is tough to put into words how appreciative I am for the chance to spend the last couple of days with such amazing people! This weekend was truly a blessing and was a great reminder of the truly incredible people that are out there. Todd was stoic in a way that I kind of expected from a guy from WI, but also exhibited incredible warmth and generosity as he and dawn opened up their home to us. Tony makes the best turkey burger I have ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the blind with Mike and the conversation made the chilly hours pass in a flash. Joh, Darren and Steve—it was great getting to know you guys! I hope to get to see you all again in the future and I felt right at home with you all immediately. I rarely feel that these days, even with my fellow Marines. Thank you to all involved for blessing me with this trip, and the pleasure of your company. I won’t forget the cheese curds or the epic pig hunt story anytime soon. God bless you guys!

June 2016 AK Halibut

Alaska, land of dreams come true. It is always a very touching and worthwhile experience bringing new people into my life and hobby. I enjoy the time I get to spend showing all the great things in this area to new friends. I’ll miss the common bonds of the military life, the razzing and fun we have, showing the beauty and wonders of my area with them. The weather, the company, the scenery and the catching were great. We ended up eating fresh fish, sharing stories and “Glacieritas,” and lamented that the time we had is nearing an end. It is my great pleasure to host these wonderful people; I am very thankful that I could help a few of them experience the glory and amazing country we all inhabit. Take care my friends, come on back.

-J. Moline
Host

This was my first WWIA event and the first time in Alaska. It has always been a dream of mine to fish and hunt in Alaska and this truly was a dream come true. I can’t say enough about the amazing hosts that made this event a success. John was spectacular, and I can’t believe how much he did day in and out to make us comfortable and successful on the boat. I have never caught a halibut before and to have the opportunity to catch a 101.8-pound fish is amazing and will be a highlight for years to come. It was a wonderful experience to spend time with fellow warriors helping to open up about our experiences both in battle and the hurdles following. This trip also helped me in my personal recovery and ability to reach out to other veterans and to see the generosity and compassion of others in our communities. Thank you so much for everything. I will never forget!

-J. Liddell, US Army
Purple Heart Recipient

What can I say? This was an experience of a lifetime. My first time fishing in Alaska and boy was it an amazing experience. I will try and do it again someday and bring my kids if I can. I want to give a special thanks to John for hosting this event and WWIA for being there for our veterans and giving us a second chance at brotherhood and to be able to hang out with our brothers-in-arms once again. Thank you for this. I will always remember it as a highlight of my life. Thank you.

-R. Olivarez, USMC

Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend this experience. I am very humbled to be among such a great group of people. The kindness of the host John Moline, Susan, and the others was very touching. How can I describe the beauty of this place in words? To me it is a slice of heaven. The other warriors have become my brothers since we met and will have lasting friendships from this gathering. The comradery I felt hanging out with heroes such as these men has been a long time. I very much enjoyed seeing the guys that live in the Midwest catching the biggest fish in their lives. I feel like I have a new extended family just a bit north of me. I would hope that more warriors get to experience this wonderful adventure. Thank you again for this experience.

June 2016 MoKan Catfishing

I love what the WWIA stands for and they more than back it up. I may have only caught a bass, but the guys made up for it with time spent and conversation. Wonderful group of guys—God bless them.

-B. Pool, US Army

Initial value. I just wanted to start by saying I really appreciate WWIA for what they do for me and other vets. We are on the first ever MO-KAN Catfishing. It has been one of the best weekends I have had in a long time. The crew here is a wonderful group of guys. The best thing on this trip is there is no hustle. It’s so laid back and peaceful. They have put me on the biggest catfish I have ever seen in person! We caught 225lbs of fish. I cannot say enough good things about this fishing trip. WWIA is truly an amazing group.

What a great time. Very gracious hosts and fellowship. Thanks to Ira, Richie and the others for a most memorable time and experience! WWIA had brought me together with other service men who have shared an experience that only we can relate to and this bring some peace to our minds.

-G. Galatas, US Army

I would like to thank everyone for this trip. Not only was this trip a success, it brought complete strangers together who will have a bond forever. Words and “thank you” is not even remotely close to thanking the people that made this happen. I will forever be indebted to this fine group of people. Every person here was a prime example of an American! The time spent here took my mind off everything that usually keeps me awake at night. Can’t say thank you enough!

August 2016 N Bar Ranch Fishing

Great event hosted by some remarkable Americans. Truly an event that met expectations that provided an experience of a lifetime. Fly fishing the Smith River afforded us tremendous fish, beautiful scenery and amazing wildlife. Mike, Dale, Cody, Ryan and Susie were absolutely providing an opportunity in which reflects greatly on the extreme generosity. The opportunity to relax, reflect and spend time with warriors like Greg and Tyson helps me remember the privileges we have being an American. Thanks for everything!

-D. Veneklasen, US Army
Purple Heart Recipient

My time here at the ranch was wonderful. I learned so much from these guys. I’m very thankful for the chance to come here and fish. If given the change I would come back here and do it again. Meeting Dale and Tyson was a great experience. I would tell everyone to come to this great state. Again, I would like to thank all the staff here at the ranch. Thanks for everything

-G. Williams, US Army
Purple Heart Recipient

I want to provide a sincere thank you not to just the Wounded Warrior in Action organization, but also want all the individuals involved to know your generosity was simply remarkable. The organization helped to provide a rehabilitation opportunity in which shared another tool towards reintegration and relaxation. The people involved truly provided an experience of a lifetime. I never really understood the resilience and devotion efforts placed towards the Veterans, however; the recognition we received from Mike, Dale, Ryan, Cody and the lovely lady Mrs. Susie shared a passion and love for what they do and also provided an education in which I’ll never forget. The WILKS Ranch owners whom I can only assume are in simple words (Remarkable Americans) they shared a part of their livelihood in which seems to be a surreal. Land stretched over Gods Earth in the World’s best country managed and preserved with helping hands provided beautiful scenery, amazing wildlife and great company. Though my letter is simple and could never emphasis my gratefulness. Thanks to everyone involved too making this outing an event I’ll never forget. From a humbled service member whom was blessed with the privilege of serving our country, to a lucky man married to the love of my life and the father of two amazing kids in which all devoted their lives to my purpose and our Country. You have definitely started another chapter within the Veneklasen lives. Thanks again!

August 2016 FL Gator Hunt

Had a great time in Florida hunting gators. Was an awesome first-time experience. Especially enjoyed the southern hospitality. The Airboat association and American Legion had many volunteers along with their family who spent a lot of time and effort into feeding us and getting on a “big lizard”. An experience of a lifetime I will never forget, many thanks. –

I’ve never felt so welcomed into a great group of people than I did this weekend. I felt like I had been a part and known everyone for years. Between WWIA, The American Legion, and the BCAA, they put on a great trip. I’ll never forget this trip and my hunt. I’ll be wearing a smile for a while. Thank y’all for the opportunity to participate in this event.

-C. Frederick, US Army

I am in it for the long run. After such a great night, I can honestly say this experience will be held responsible for all my future sleepless nights of gator hunting. I moved down to Florida with the goal of becoming and outdoor sportsman and after my first ever hunt last night reinforced my decision. This organization can’t get any better. From the people to the dedicated volunteers with so much experience who take time from their friends and families and accommodate us. It is a humbling experience to see how many people care. Thanks, WWIA and volunteers for and unforgettable night.

August 2016 Galveston Fishing

When you leave the fury and violence of the combat zone, it never really leaves you in your mind. Being able to participate in events like these WWIA fishing trips allows you to forget those times of war in your mind. Without question, the staff of WWIA are committed to helping wounded warriors cope with the burdens of war through recreational activities (hunting/fishing).
I’ll never forget the WWIA staff and their sincerity of heart and mind, and the renewed hope they have given me and other wounded warriors.

-R. Martin, US Army

This past weekend my experience during this trip has been amazing- from the time I arrived here until now, just phenomenal. Brad and Julie were so nice and accommodating. The weather ended up being good for fishing on the water. I am so grateful for having this opportunity to be here.
I caught two big speckle trout, something I have been wanting to do for a few years now. I really enjoyed talking to Jon, Richard and Buck about the experiences being wounded in combat.
All of the trips with WWIAF I have been on over the years are like a big morale boost. I have pulled myself up out of depression that I have been suffering from for a long time. These types of events have brought back a big passion and love for the outdoors I used to have. Thank you WWIAF!

I have an undying respect for those who have worn the uniform for our country. I have a very special place in my heart for combat soldiers and veterans. You voluntarily place yourselves in harm’s way to preserve our freedom and the interests of America. I am grateful for your service and sacrifices. To you combat wounded soldiers and veterans, you also hold a very special place in my heart. We have hosted WWIA events since 2009. We have met many wonderful men over the years and have developed friendships from many men we have served. Having an understanding of the challenges that face combat wounded soldiers, we are honored to be able to serve you as a result of our association with the WWIA. I love you guys and I love this organization. I love serving you. And this all happened as a result of a random conversation my wife had with a stranger on an airline flight! He gave her the name of WWIA founder John McDaniel Lt. Col US Army (ret). Can’t tell me there isn’t a God! Keep the faith and never give up!

September 2016 PA Cast & Blast

I’m impressed. It was an insanely fun weekend. The first day we were shooting clay pigeons and laughing. The second day we went on the actual hunt and were able to crack some birds. It was such an amazing and relaxing experience to go hunting down some birds with other verts. And the fishing? Are you kidding me? That was hilariously fun. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the incredible experience. PS I will steal your cooks one day. Best food I’ve ever had.

Simple words cannot express my heartfelt thanks for this wonderful opportunity offered to me by WWIA. The sad thing is that must be said is that opportunities like this were never offered to us Vietnam vets and if they were, we didn’t know about it. Sandy Deveney and Gravel Spring Lodge and Fox Gap Hunting Club were absolutely first class. Meeting and sharing stories with the younger vets was fun for all of us and respect across the generations was shared by all. No inter service rivalry and lots of laughs shared. I gave up all shooting when I came home from RVN in 1969 and this was the first time I shot a weapon in all that time. I Loved it! I love fishing but always used a spin outfit and they taught me to cast a flyrod which I love. I am so hooked that when I arrive home I will join the local Rod and Gun club and want to volunteer working in their trout raising facility. I will also take up target shooting. Yes, WWIA has opened my eyes to a whole new world because of these wonderful people. Thank you from my heart,

Had a great time, Sandy and the guides were great. Food was great. Second ever hunting trip, got a pheasant and a chukar, caught my first trout, 6 of them. Fished for them many times before never caught one. Enjoyed Sandy’s cigars,

This has been a long time await. What an amazing trip. First time ever hunting pheasant and it was one amazing feeling. This event was truly a blessing with all the people that put time into this event to make everything work. From the first day here, I felt welcomed shooting guns and making friends. Thank you again for allowing me to be a part of this amazing trip.

Just saying thank you doesn’t seem to be enough. WWIA does everything just right, especially vetting the organizations or hosts. This event was incredible, from introducing us to upland bird hunting to the world class trout we were allowed to catch. Everyone worked hard to make sure we felt welcome as if we were family. The facilities were comfortable, clean and well organized. The hosts took the time to teach us how to fly fish and provided everything! Poles, gear, equipment, firearms, knowledge and friendship. I would be honored to come here again. Thank you so very much for this experience.

As I sit around the glowing campfire, the only sounds I hear are crickets and camaraderie. Fifteen years ago, today I was surrounded by the same sounds and then the world changed. Being here at Gravel Springs was the best place I could be. Instead of being consumed with thoughts of painful memories, I was consumed with pride. Being surrounded by not only vets, but vets that know what you’ve been through is a great feeling. Add to that being surrounded by above average Americans who go out of their way to let you know how much they appreciate our service is awesome. Going hunting and fishing with these guys was just the icing on the cake. This is the first 9/11 that didn’t emotionally take its toll on me. I was too busy feeling the uncommon bond of a band of brothers. We all came together as strangers and left as friends. Great job WWIA! Thank you,

Not many things can render a person such as myself wordless/phraseless when asked to explain something. I’ve been able to describe the feeling and emotions of meeting musicians such as Rascal Flatts to Metallica to meet famous people such as George W Bush to Gen Norman Schwarzkopf. This time is different and putting it exactly into the correct words is harder than expected, so let me put it this way. I, Timothy Earl Bredberg, would like to thank you for everything that was provided on this trip. I’m not talking about the food, the gear, or even the hunt/fish; I’m talking about providing for the people. Six months ago, I was thinking about putting a gun in my mouth and ending it all. I had had enough with being treated like an outsider by everyone. I was tired of feeling alone. Don’t get me wrong I have the most amazing wife and kids, but I was tired of letting them down or at least feeling as though I had. My wife kept reassuring me I hadn’t let her down, but I still felt as though I had. Fast forward a few months to present time and the suicidal thoughts have passed but the thoughts of being alone were still there. I almost called the day of the trip and said I couldn’t come. I am very happy I did! I’m not alone, there are others like me who are wounded who like to hunt/fish to love the outdoors. So, thank you for providing that. It means a lot more than you shall know.

The PHOTB Tournament was an incredible display of what this foundation is all about. From the Heroes camaraderie and fellowship to the wonderful volunteers it was just a great atmosphere. You couldn’t ask for a better backdrop than the Bay with the city and Air Force base the countless fishing holes…. I truly had an awesome day and really enjoyed my time with incredible people! September 2016 Eagle River Muskie Chal-Lunge

The last six months I lost my best friend and brother to suicide. I had a heart attack and heart surgery. I am an alcoholic and fell into a deep depression. I didn’t drink, but I spent money going payday loan to payday loan over $13,000. My wife and vet center counselor tried to help me, yet one night I decided to end it all. I was stopped by a call from a person to whom now is my best friend. I had met him at a PTSD group at the vet center. That night he saved my life, but I still didn’t see hope in my future. I stayed on my 5 acres for the last six months except for VA and Vet Center appointments. My wife, best friend, and my daughter got me to go on this trip. They packed my bags and watched me leave, then called to check I was here. I went out to catch a musky today and learned so much more. I remembered I loved fishing and it was false concerns why I wouldn’t go. I didn’t catch a musky but got so much freedom and hope moving forward. Thanks to WWIAF and the sponsors and especially Brent, my guide who didn’t have to listen but did and gave wisdom. Thank you all and to God above for a wonderful day, calm water and great friends.

Scott, how do I say THANK YOU enough for what you and your team did for me and the rest of the warriors! The trip was awesome, and the fishing wasn’t bad either! The rooms were great…. the meals were great, and the camaraderie was fantastic. I had my hesitations about attending this great event, only because of my PTSD…but that all but vanished the minute I met you and the rest of the group. To be welcomed with open arms by you and the rest of the people was very humbling to say the least. I was able to open up and let down my guard and that felt great.
Again, thanks Scott, I shall stay in touch.

We are so thankful to have been included in this wonderful escape. We met some of the friendliest people here at this event. So many generous people honoring our wounded warriors makes my heart burst with pride. The hunt was great for Mark. I’m so glad he enjoyed this as much as he did. Getting him to go away on any kind of trip is difficult, so this has been a special gift. I have met some wonderful young wives and hope to stay in touch with them. Maybe now Mark will check Facebook more if the men are on. You along with the couples we met are special angels giving hope and happiness to so many people. I can’t say thank you enough! God bless you! With lots of love and gratitude,

I greatly appreciate the honor you have bestowed upon me as being your associate “PH token guy”  You have a heart larger than most and greater than any I have had the pleasure of knowing! I am at your disposal as long as I am able, or you will have me. Each year I learn a little bit more about life’s pleasures and why I might be here… (little selfish maybe ) The Warriors are great each and every year! Mark, “Safety” Mark, and Rob are by far the finest of the Americans I have met. I like to let all the guys know they can call me anytime. The ladies are sweet as apple pie. I enjoy each and every minute with the warriors and the ladies. I thank God for allowing me to be a part of this and me being a part or fraction of their lives. I hope for these four days it made a difference to the positive.

Where do I begin? I’ve known you and about what you are doing for several years now. What I didn’t completely realize is the impact made on these families. I watched a couple be transformed from defeat to hopeful again. I made best friends with another. We watched another open up and blossom in front of us. I am so grateful for the time I have had to connect with you and the other couples, especially with you. You have and have always had my full support. I would like to help more if ever needed in the future. Ms. Lou, keep doing what you are doing. October 2016 Bayfield Cast & Blast

The people who set up this weekend for us are an amazing group of people. All of the planning, effort, and coordination between the people involved happened with the sole purpose of helping Soldiers and Marines move on from those dark places in which our minds roam. I will never be able to repay their kindness. The other veterans that I was fortunate enough to spend this weekend with are some of the most selfless individuals that I have ever met. They helped me in ways that I’m sure they will never know. I must admit that before I came here, my life had become more and more isolated and I was nervous about coming. But now that it’s over, having been brought back together with other veterans who know what I know and don’t judge me for it, well, it gives me hope.
Again, I would just like to thank everybody for this experience. And a special thank you to Chris and Brenda, Jamie and his family, and all of the local people who have been so kind to me. I know I will always be able to look back on this weekend as a turning point in my life.

From the moment I met the other guys at the airport, I knew we were going to have a great and memorable weekend. I felt an instant bond and a brotherhood. The fishing was amazing and I was able to really appreciate what God had given us; a second chance. I often wonder why I was spared and why I made it when others didn’t. Spending a weekend with such great people was such a therapeutic experience. Thank you, Chris, Brenda, Josh, John, Time, Russ, Chrissy, Todd and everyone who made this happen. What an experience; lifelong friendships!

After reflecting on this four-day event, I can honestly say that I am aa multifaceted ball of joy. On one hand I am happy that this weekend went off without a hitch. Everyone’s needs were met; everyone was busy with activities throughout the day, and after a jam-packed weekend was completed, we all met and bonded. The fishing portion was fantastic! I had never caught a small mouth bass that was a consistent 5 to 6 pounds! My thanks go out to Jeff Evers and Josh Tiegen for the excellent day of fishing. Each were very knowledgeable and entertaining. The hosts, Chris and Brenda Diesing, were out of this world outstanding. They bent over backwards to take care of us or get us to our next points, to hunt or fish. They’re fantastic people whom I would love to participate in another of their events.
Josh Krueger is just flat out outstanding. He has a way to calmly take a leadership role and make things happen. He personally coordinated the logistics of this weekend, so it would be a success.
Many thanks go out to Jamie Vee and family, the owners and proprietors to the land that we hunted.
All in all, this weekend was fantastic. All of our needs were me and the volunteers each went above and beyond to make this weekend go off without a hitch or hiccup. I truly had an outstanding time and sincerely hope the best for this program. I also want to thank Terri and Patti the owners of the lodge that we stayed. The accommodations were great, and they were extremely friendly.

The Bayfield Cast and Blast was a great event. I love getting together with other veterans and telling stories. The fishing was great with David Brown. I caught my first muskie. Russ was my hunting guide and I were in a good spot. There were scrapes and rubs and runway’s all over where my tree stand was set up. The first day I just saw a few does and a small buck. Then on the second day I saw more does. In the last few minutes of shooting time there was a big body buck trotting through the slashings with a purpose about 60 yards in front of me. I didn’t get a good look at the rack because it blended in too well with the slashings, but he was so thick you couldn’t tell where his neck ended. And he had a head the size of a horse. That buck did not come close enough for me to get a shot off.
Everyone that hosted us and fed us were so nice and polite. Scenic Drive, Flying Eagle, Delta Diner. The people that put it on Chris and Brenda Diesing are amazing people. They change people’s lives in what they do, and we cannot thank them enough.

First off, it’s very humbling to see all the great people with WWIA and the community of Phillips Wisconsin sacrifice so much time and effort to plan these events for guys like me. Everyone went out of their way to ensure a most pleasant and exciting event. The planning and logistics for this event made the travel effortless for me. All I had to do was get on the plane. Jake and Derek called me before my travels to ensure all of my questions and concerns were met. Upon arrival to Phillips, Jake was waiting outside to pick me up and take me to Camp Hackett. I was hunting within a couple of hours after landing. The camp provided a very nice relaxing atmosphere to decompress and relax. Local members of the community were constantly dropping in to see if they could do anything for the warriors to make our visit as pleasant and enjoyable as possible. I was really astonished at how the community of Phillips backs the WWIA and their efforts to take care of the warriors. The local VFW showed up in force one night to provide dinner and to share stories with the Ole Timers and that evening was enjoyed by all. As for the meals, all I can say is that I probably gained 5 pounds during the event. Every meal was delicious and plentiful. For the hunting and fishing part of this event, I ended up doing more grouse hunting than anything since it was an opportunity to try something new. I know we probably jumped close to 100 birds during the event and got a chance to hunt and walk one of the prettiest pieces of property I have ever had the privilege to hunt. The muskie fishing was also a new experience for me. I had a chance to learn a new type of fishing by one of the most knowledgeable muskie fishing guides in the country. All in all, I had a blast at this event and I would certainly welcome future opportunities with WWIA. I’ll close by saying Thank You for the opportunity to be part of a great event that provided me with an opportunity to truly get away and enjoy myself.

Just wanted to take time out and thank all who support us Purple Heart Recipients. Thank you for building this wonderful facility and letting me get to enjoy Northern Wisconsin and allowing me to stay and enjoy God’s country. I also appreciate the individuals of the Town of Phillips, WI who welcomed us like family. I fully enjoyed being outside, being an outdoorsman again and building new friendships I can have for the rest of my life. I miss hanging out with others who share the same likes I do. Without this organization that supports wounded warriors I would still be wanting that camaraderie. Thank you for having me. Hopefully, I will be able to come back. Much appreciated and thank you for everything. Also, special thanks to Jake and Bryan you guys are great, hopefully we can hunt and fish again. Semper Fidelis.

Sometimes the best form of therapy is a simple conversation with others who can relate – conversation that involves telling stories and sharing experiences. I can’t think of a better way to facilitate that kind of conversation than sharing an amazing outdoor experience in a small group. I also cannot think of anyone more suitable to facilitate that experience than the amazing folks who hosted/contributed to the “Muskie on a Fly” trip. While I’m confident that the wounded warriors on this trip would all agree that they knew what a military career might cause them to sacrifice, and they’d most likely volunteer to do it all again, it is refreshing to know that there are still people who proudly support and cherish the troops and their service. Those involved in making this trip happen serve as a reminder to me why I raised my hand to volunteer to protect our nation, our freedom, our way of life, and our sportsmen heritage; I am forever grateful.

November 2016 SD Pheasant with Grand Ciel Lodge

Thank you WWIA and Grand Ciel Lodge for an unforgettable weekend. I cannot express in words how honored and humbled I am to have been able to take part in this event. The generosity of Brad and Julie and the dedication of WWIA to organize this pheasant hunt is commendable and unmatched. They went above and beyond any expectation I had. The food was insane (I think I gained 10 pounds!) and the hunting was even better (almost 100 pheasants in two mornings, just sayin’).
The best part was getting to spend some time with some true warriors… all of whom wanted no special treatment or recognition… all from different backgrounds… but all brought together for some great hunting and fellowship because of WWIA and Grand Ciel Lodge. Brad and Julie are an inspiration and their motivation to support WWIA is genuine. I cannot wait for the next WWIA event and I will pay this back one way or another. RLTW

Never in my life have I felt so humble and privileged to attend such an event. I’ve never opened up and talked about past combat experiences to people I have just met; but such an open and accepting environment makes it easy to. Brad and Julie are two of the most beautiful individuals I’ve had the honor to meet and they more than took care of me as if I was part of their family. Brad took me on two of the greatest/most fun hunts I’ve ever been on. Julie’s cooking is amazing. It’s very easy to tell that this organization truly cares for the wounded warriors and I hope it will continue for as long as there are wounded US soldiers.

-R. Beach, US Army

How does one express their gratitude through words when words will not do justice? While contemplating past events, both traumatic and joyous, I was accompanied by some of the most caring and selfless people I have met in my entire life. I witnessed fellow vets tell stories and recall personal events that they haven’t told in years. I could go on and on, but I will not bore you. Brad and Julie, Rick and Tim, and everyone else who hosted us were only concerned with us having a good time. Never have I been treated to such five-star accommodations, five-star food, and world class hunting. I quickly became the laughing stock for my ability to shoot and shoot. 75+ rounds if anyone was counting.
In summary, THANK YOU. Your generosity and compassion save lives. These experiences will help vets become productive and healthy citizens. No one owes us anything and you all give so much.

-E. Haworth, US Army

This was by far the greatest hunting experience I have ever had in my life. Everything about this trip was absolutely amazing from the world class hunting to the amazing food to the kind and generous hosts. Everybody made me feel very welcome and a part of the group. When I told my wife about the trip, she asked if pheasant hunting in South Dakota was good. I told her if you’re a surfer your ultimate goal is to surf in Hawaii, if you’re a pheasant hunter, your ultimate goal is to hunt in South Dakota.
I am beyond thankful and humbled to have been selected to participate in this trip and be a part of WWIA. I cannot say thank you enough to everybody at WWIA who made this possible for me and to the outstanding hosts who allowed me into their home and showed me such a great time.
Thank you WWIA and thank you Grand Ciel Lodge for this once in a lifetime experience.

This was the weekend that I needed. I have taken so much from all the communities generosity. I especially want to thank the guides and leadership team that provided us all this healing experience. I have especially benefitted emotionally from my time here in my newfound home. Medicine and counseling cannot compare with the healing that I have received this weekend. I am so grateful for the opportunity to attend this event. If it was not for the amazing people of the area and the Kuneytown Sportsman’s club, I would not be able to hunt because of how commercialized it is in Texas. This event is amazing. Everyone involved did everything they could to make us feel at home and comfortable. One of the best experiences of my life. I love the Kuneytown family.

Peace is what I feel I have discovered on this amazing adventure. I was not sure what to expect. I have met new brothers and friends that I hope to keep for a lifetime. We are men with common values that have helped me to realize that I am not alone. Brotherhood is not sassily formed on such a short amount of time. I am and will be forever grateful. I have shot my first ever duck (bluebill) as well as my first Canadian goose. I can’t wait to use Mrs. Tidball’s cookbook recipes for them.
I’m not sure that saying the words “thank you” can express the gratitude that I feel toward everyone who has helped make this trip possible for us. I know I will not remember everything that has taken place during this wonderful trip, but I will never forget the way I feel now.

Thanks for such a great trip! A great lodge, new adventures on the river, and a great group of people. Getting to hunt with such knowledgeable people has been awesome, and everyone in the group got along so great. Lasting memories for sure!

November 2016 MoKan Ducks & Bucks

I still can’t find the words to describe this experience. I’m still in awe of everything, but especially the people. I’m just so thankful to have met you all and thankful to be alive. Sometimes I forget just how amazing my country is and I’m so grateful to be reminded of just what we fight for. I’m grateful to have been part of this. What’s being done here is beautiful.

I want to thank WWIA for a dream come true. Since I was a young boy, I dreamed of hunting whitetail in the Midwest. I have never hunted ducks before and now I am addicted to it. From boots on the ground it was go time. Everyone here is topnotch, bending over backward for us, making sure this was the time of our lives. I cannot express enough how grateful I am for this event. I have made some new friends and everlasting memories. Being able to connect with my Brothers in Arms through the great outdoors is just a special time. Thank you again.

What a wonderful weekend of hunting and just all out enjoyment this has been. You all have touched my life in ways that you will never know. It’s wonderful to feel appreciated by so many people who care for me as an individual. You all will go with me for the rest of my life and I hope to pass some of what you gave me to others in the future.

I have never been with such a humble group of men that have made me a brother of theirs as soon as I stepped out of my truck and met them for the first time. I now have a larger family than ever. This has been an experience that I will carry the rest of my life and it was one of the top, if not right on tip. I love you guys and everything you stand for!

I want to thank everyone for this amazing week and giving me the opportunity to do some amazing once-in-a-lifetime things. Everyone there I now consider family. I will never forget you guys and I appreciate how much everyone went out of their way to make us all feel comfortable. You are truly amazing Americans and I love each and every one of you.

November 2016 OK Whitetail Hunt

You may be a podunk ass yat-yas marine, but I’ll keep ya. I’m a pretty good judge of good dudes that could have made it far in the marine corps. You my friend have surpassed your injuries and now are continuing to give back through WWIA. I did not get my buck of a lifetime, but I did meet wonderful people, take a 200 yard on a doe, find another hunter’s deer in the dark and the list goes on and on. Thanks goes out to you for being you and to WWIA for giving me this amazing opportunity.

Since being invited to this event, all I could think about was going. Last time invited I was at a very low point in my life. This time “I needed you.” Thank you all so much. This is and will always be life changing. We laughed and teased and became whole. It is nice to be whole. My holidays are now complete because of you, all of you. I will never forget. I will walk or crawl if you ever needed me. I would be there like all you have been here for me.

There aren’t enough thank you’s I can say to WWIA, Russ Johnson and family and all the others that put this all together. This has been very therapeutic for me and I really enjoyed the camaraderie with the other hunters. This hunting trip has been a true blessing for me to attend. I had a blast. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It was a true honor to be there.

November 2016 MN Whitetail Hunt

This trip has been unbelievable. From day one, this was amazing. From the host Jay to the Associates Derek and Frenchy, I feel like I have a new family. Everyone was super approachable and friendly. I got a chance to shoot the biggest buck I have ever shot and to be around people that love service members and truly care about everything that we’ve been though. I really didn’t expect this much friendship and hospitality. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. This trip has been very uplifting and I couldn’t ask to be around a better group of guys than this trip. Thank you again.

We are on our way back home after the Inaugural SE Minnesota Whitetail Hunt and I’m wishing we didn’t have to leave! What an amazing event! Jay Kim and Jon Sitarz are two of the nicest guys I’ve ever met, and I am so gracious that they would open up this piece of Whitetail Hunting Heaven to the WWIA. Never in my life have I ever seen so much deer sign, especially buck sign. It was incredible! In the area we were hunting it was deer everywhere at any given time, something I’ve never experienced. The accommodations were amazing. By far, the nicest hunting camp I’ve ever stayed at, as cozy and comfortable as you could imagine. The food was awesome. Everything about this event was above and beyond great, especially the Host and volunteers. They were all so comfortable to talk to and be around, never felt awkward or out of place at this event. This event was truly a giant success and I can see it continuing to be for years to come. Thank you so much to all who made this possible.

The Inaugural SE MN Deer hunt was incredible. The beauty of the land we hunted. The big bucks running everywhere, the outstanding food, but the most impressive part was the hosts, volunteers and fellow wounded warriors. The hosts and volunteers were extremely gracious, laid back and also incredible listeners. Opening up and engaging in conversation was extremely easy, their sincerity and gratitude were very humbling. The event is tailor made to help wounded warriors relax and open up yet have a thrilling hunt of a lifetime too. This event with its hosts and volunteers has success written all over it. It is going to help a lot of wounded warriors, only great things about this event, the people, food, and things to come. What an awesome time!

December 2016 Newfield Deer Hunt

I had a great time. Carol and her family showed us a great time. I believe this is a great time. I hope to see them again. A very good thing that y’all are doing here. Thanks for a great time WWIAF.

Thank you for the experience. It was nice to be with other soldiers who’d been injured. I got to feel that fight or flight feeling but in a positive way. The last time I felt that was losing a fire fight. It helped me to feel that adrenaline in a positive way.

Really enjoyed the opportunity to learn so much. Being my first time hunting in such a low key environment was the best experience. Really good family linked up with the hunting program also. I learned how to track and field dress a deer which is something that I have always wanted to learn.

December 2016 Ponfeigh Farms Deer Hunt

The mission that WWIA has undertaken in support of wounded veterans is absolutely humbling. I’m both proud and honored to have the opportunity to hunt with this program. There are so many incredible people who have given their time, energy and resources for us. I wish I had a way to truly express my gratitude. Please, never stop showing America’s veterans that there are good people who are truly grateful for the sacrifices they and their families make. God Speed in your future endeavors.

I could never thank WWIA enough for the great opportunity and experience they gave me on this deer hunt. WWIA is a great organization giving wounded warriors an opportunity to get out and do things they would not normally be able to do. I met some great people and made memories I will remember the rest of my life. I killed my first deer on the hunting trip and it was amazing. Thank you WWIA.

December 2016 AR Ducks & Bucks

I want to start out by thanking WWIA and everyone involved with the organization. It’s nice to be able to connect with other vets, especially when you are getting to experience the outdoors together, even if you’re freezing doing it. I also want to thank Bill Muir, Lance, and especially William French for taking five days off to show a couple of vets a great time. Mr. French was an amazing host, and it really speaks to his character that he would open his home to four strangers and let them hunt his land. Overall it was an amazing event that I’m honored to have been a part of.

Had a great time with the soldiers hunting ducks and deer. Can’t wait to be involved in another event. Great group of guys.

-L. Green
Supporter

This experience was extremely rewarding. I was able to meet some new guys that had the same issues I had. The organization was very motivated to make sure that we all had our itineraries and connected to the host. The WWIA was also very organized and was able to put together a great plan. Much thanks to Corrina. The Host was very welcoming, and the hunt overall was a complete success, even though I wasn’t able to get anything. The overall experience for me was very therapeutic and much needed to get away from the daily grind of civilian life. The Host could relate to us, as he also had a below knee amputee. I cannot express in words how much it means to me. Thank you WWIA staff and Host.

I truly had more fun than the Heroes I hosted. This was my first WWIA event and certainly will not be my last. I have truly made four new friends who will always be welcome at Red Oak. WWIA’s organizational skills and attention to detail made this a worry-free event. “Frenchy” was an excellent Associate and represented WWIA with class. Chris, Troy, and Chris are down to earth, great guys and a joy to take hunting. The only thing I wish I could change was the lack of ducks. I hope to stay in touch and continue to host WWIA events.

-William French
Host

I would like to thank all involved in making this possible for me to come on this hunt. Your organization and all participants really helped me feel good and a part of something. This has been great therapy also. It’s nice to be around others that have some of the same issues. Able to talk to everyone about what helps vs not helps so it gives us some options to discuss with doctors so can see if it will work. Had a great hunt, really enjoyed myself.

-C. Middleton, US Army

For a first-time event, William French, Bill Muir, and Lance Green really have done an excellent job at providing a top-notch event for WWIA Warriors. This event epitomizes the term “Southern hospitality.” Everything was extremely laid back and conducive to warriors, hosts, and volunteers. Interaction on a deep and personal level, it was an honor and a true pleasure to be involved with this great group of guys. The deer hunting was incredible; duck hunting exciting; food and accommodations were superb; but nothing compared to the comradery between everyone. I can’t thank WWIA and the Red Oak Plantation crew enough!!

December 2016 OR Bobcat Hunt

The opportunity to take part in a world-class hunting opportunity was only the beginning of the experience. Being surrounded by wonderful and caring people, as well as the gamesmanship of the Fern Ridge Tree Hound Club was top notch. I have never hand the opportunity to work with hounds before and to see working dogs in action was a truly amazing experience. The lodging and chow was incredible and the hospitality and welcome of this group is something I will carry for a very long time. I have walked away with not only more connections of Wounded Warriors but also friendships of local outdoorsmen. Thank you for the opportunity and experience of a lifetime.

-J. Liddell, US army

I want to thank WWIA for giving me a chance of a lifetime experience. Mike Martell of Fern Ridge Tree Hound Club hosted a great experience and the chance to go on a bobcat hunt. It’s nothing I have experienced before. They were very caring, professional and very patriotic. The club gave us all a very warm welcome and the lodge we stayed at was great! I had an absolutely awesome time and can’t wait to share my experience with my family and friends. Thank you!

December 2016 Great Creek Deer Hunt

This has been one of the most amazing times that I have ever experienced! I have never hunted deer with dogs before, but I am definitely a fan! Everyone in Virginia welcomed us with open arms, very friendly atmosphere! I really felt like I was part of the family here. Amazing hospitality!! Top notch hunting! Nick did an awesome job of representing WWIA and blending us in with everyone. I’m very honored to have been selected for this event and to have made memories and friends that will last a lifetime!

I want to thank everyone involved during this hunt. It was such an amazing and fun time. Everyone made you feel at home; they made you feel part of the family. December 2016 DoubleCreek TN Rifle Deer Hunt

God does work in mysterious ways. Shelley, Dennis, Joel, Jason, Nicole, and Derek were absolutely amazing. This event changed me. I was able to grasp onto something I loved doing as a kid. I felt at peace. I was able to be myself. The hosts are true American patriots and the love they show for strangers is doing God’s work. Thank you WWIA! Look forward to more hunts.
