FAQ
GENERAL FAQ
What makes Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation different from all the other Wounded Warrior or veterans organizations?
Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation (WWIA) devotes all of its energy and resources to supporting the men and women wounded in combat who were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. We serve all Purple Heart recipients, regardless of era of conflict, by providing them with the opportunity to participate in world-class outdoor sporting activities that assist in their recovery efforts. We do this at no cost to the Heroes served.
Is WWIA affiliated with any other Wounded Warrior organizations?
No. WWIA is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization registered with the IRS. We are not a part of or affiliated with any other wounded warrior organization.
ATTENDING AN EVENT
I have a Purple Heart and I want to go on an event. How do I apply?
Thank you for your service! We welcome you to attend one of our world-class hunting or fishing events at no cost to you. Please fill out and submit your application here.
I just filled out my application, when can I expect to hear from you?
Once we receive your application, our Hero Engagement Specialist will contact you with 5 business days. The amount of time before you are scheduled to participate on an event depends on when we receive your application, your preferences, and your availability. Some events (e.g. bear hunting) are very rare opportunities and can have a longer wait.
I went on an event already. Can I go again?
Yes. Our goal is to reserve each Purple Heart veteran every three to five years. If your contact information has changed, please updated us with your new information here. No need to resubmit your full application.
I am a Wounded Warrior, but I do not have a Purple Heart. May I still apply?
The WWIA values your service to our nation a great deal; however, we are a Purple Heart organization. All of our activities and funding streams directly support our mission. There are lots of ways you can get involved with our work. Visit our Get Involved page for more information.
My Purple Heart is not from OIF or OEF. May I still apply?
Yes, as long as you were wounded in combat and can provide documentation of your Purple Heart award, we look forward to serving you!
I am a Purple Heart recipient with a lot of disabilities and/or was severely wounded. Can I still apply to attend an event?
Yes, you can! We will work very hard to find or plan an opportunity that matches your abilities. To serve you, all we ask is that you are upfront with us regarding your needs and challenges. Specifically, if you require a caregiver or a service dog, please let us know on your application. Additionally, if things change as you go through different phases of recovery, please be sure to keep us up to date. We understand that things will change over time as you progress through your healing and we need to know about these changes to serve you best and ensure a rewarding experience with WWIA.
My address/email/phone number just changed. Should I let you know?
Yes, please! Send complete this form so that we can update your information in our database. If we can’t contact you, we can’t serve you.
Purple Heart Associates
Who are the WWIA Purple Heart Associates?
WWIA Purple Heart Associates are combat-wounded veterans who have been nominated by their peers and validated by the Foundation as leaders who are loyal and dedicated to supporting our mission and the Heroes we serve. Once trained, our Purple Heart Associates volunteer their time to provide the critical link between the Heroes, hosts and WWIA on all of our events. Click here to meet our Purple Heart Associates!
How do I become a Purple Heart Associate for WWIA?
Prospective Purple Heart Associates are selected through a nominative process by current Purple Heart Associates and validated by the WWIA Staff.
Hosting
I would like to host an event for WWIA. What is my first step?
The first step is to complete our Host an Event form. Once received, we will be in contact to discuss your idea within three to five business days.
I filled out the Host an Event application. What happens now?
Once the Host Application is filled out, our team will review it. You should expect a phone call or email within 5 business days to discuss the details of your proposal.
I want to take one Hero out on my boat with me/out hunting with my family. Is this possible?
Thank you for your interest in serving our Wounded Warriors. While we certainly do appreciate your generous offer to host a Hero, this opportunity is not in the scope of the services we provide. A main pillar of WWIA is to connect 3-5 Purple Heart veterans with each other to foster the kind of small-group camaraderie they experienced in the military. Hunting and fishing is just one facet of what we do here—without the element of bonding with other veterans who share similar challenges and experiences, these Heroes don’t experience the same quality of healing.
If you are still interested in getting involved in some way, you might get a better idea here. Thank you so much for your interest in WWIA and please let us know if you have any other questions.
Donations
How do I make a monetary donation?
Thank you for your support! Please click here to donate securely.
How do I become a corporate sponsor?
Please visit our Corporate Sponsorship page to find out more about becoming a corporate sponsor of WWIA.
Can I donate through my paycheck?
Maybe. If you are a Federal employee, you can donate to the Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation through the Combined Federal Campaign (#94512). State employees can donate through one of the many State Employee Campaigns (ID codes vary by state). Many private businesses offer paycheck donations through their matching funds programs. Please visit our Donate page for information about corporate matching. You can also contact the people who handle your paycheck for more information.
I have some used clothing/furniture/equipment that I would like to donate to veterans. How can I do this?
Unfortunately, no. The Foundation does not currently accept used items. You can sell these items through eBay giving to help benefit the WWIA.
Do you accept new and unused items as a donation?
Perhaps. If your new or unused item compliments our mission then there is a possibility. We have many raffles, auctions, and fundraisers across the country and are always looking for items to use at these fundraising events. Please understand, however, if the cost of getting the items to the events is higher than the value of the item, it becomes cost prohibitive. If you have something that you think will work, please contact us at info@wwiaf.org and we will be happy to help.
Can I donate my used car or boat to you?
Yes, you can! Vehicle Donation to Any Charity (v-Dac), provides easy access for donors who wish to support the WWIA by donating a vehicle or vessel.
If I donate money, how much of those funds are actually used to support Wounded Warriors?
Based on our 2016 IRS tax filing, 88% of all donations directly supports WWIA field activities.
Volunteering
I would like to volunteer with Wounded Warriors in Action. What can I do?
There are many ways to help, such as assisting with fundraising or promoting awareness. However, unless you have an event in your area, it is unlikely that you can volunteer to work directly with a Hero. If you are interested in finding out more about ways to support WWIA’s mission, please visit Get Involved or contact us at info@wwiaf.org.
There is a WWIA event being held near me. How can I get involved?
Please contact us at info@wwiaf.org and let us know your location and how you’d like to help. We will do our best to put you in contact with the proper person.
I am a trained guide for hunting/fishing and would like to offer my services. How can I help?
Please contact us directly at info@wwiaf.org to discuss the possibility of donating your talents to one of our events.
Media/Outreach
I am a member of the media and would like to write a story about WWIA. Who should I contact?

Can I promote WWIA on my website?
Of course! Please note that we must approve any WWIA promotion before you post it. We are very sensitive to our branding, use of our logo and messaging. Please contact us at info@wwiaf.org for more information.
I have a product/book/website/service that can help veterans. Can you please promote it?
While we appreciate all you do for veterans, we generally do not promote other services or products. You can always reach out to us at info@wwiaf.org if you have any questions.
