The Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation Inc. (WWIA) serves our nation’s combat-wounded Purple Heart recipients by providing therapeutic, world-class, outdoor adaptive sporting activities as a means to recognize and honor their sacrifice, encourage independence and connections with communities, and promote healing and wellness through camaraderie and a shared passion for the outdoors.
These therapeutic events are delivered at no cost to our Heroes, reflecting our deep commitment to their well-being and recovery.

Honor. Connect. Heal.
Honor: We recognize and honor the tremendous service and sacrifice of every Purple Heart recipient through meaningful outdoor adventures that reflect our gratitude and respect.
Connect: WWIA events—typically serving 3–5 Heroes over a period of 3–5 days, foster deep camaraderie, meaningful connections with fellow veterans and communities who care, and instill a sense of belonging.
Heal: Our outdoor adventures promote healing—mentally, physically, and spiritually—through nature, community, and purposeful activity, helping veterans rebuild resilience.

The Mission and Impact of WWIA (on Location at Camp Hackett)

Evidence-Based Impact & Healing
With over 19 years of service since 2007, WWIA has directly impacted thousands of Heroes. For example, in the past year alone, we served 166 Purple Heart recipients through 36 events across 17 states—including whitetail hunts in Tennessee, halibut fishing in Alaska, and bear hunts in Wisconsin. We help veterans fulfill lifelong dreams while simultaneously unveiling avenues for healing, camaraderie, and connection.
Importantly, our work is backed by scientific research. A partnership with Cornell University supports our efforts to reduce veteran suicide, proving that we are changing and saving lives!
Top-Rated, Trustworthy, and Mission-Focused
WWIA is consistently recognized for performance and integrity:
- Ranked #1 out of 78 military-charity programs by an independent scientific consortium, reflecting our leading performance, staff support, and participant satisfaction.
- Maintains low overhead: 90% of donations go directly to field programs.
- Accredited by Independent Charities of America (ICA) and holds a Gold Seal of Transparency from Candid (GuideStar).
Why Our Work Matters
Each WWIA event is more than an adventure—it’s a powerful catalyst for:
- Healing trauma and isolation, particularly for veterans dealing with PTSD, TBI, or loss of limb function.
- Creating lifelong bonds—both with fellow Heroes and with local host communities across North America—fueling kinship, belonging, and shared renewal.
- Empowering independence and purpose, reminding veterans of their strength and contributions both in service and in civilian life.
