![]()
We are honored to bring you a truly powerful and inspiring episode of the WWIA Podcast. WWIA Founder and CEO, John McDaniel, is joined by Purple Heart Hero, dedicated WWIA Guide, and cherished friend of the Foundation, Mr. Derek Duplisea.
Derek’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. A dual citizen of both the United States and Canada, he served with distinction in the Canadian Armed Forces and later in the United States Army. In this heartfelt conversation, Derek opens up about his time in uniform, including the harrowing account of when his unit was ambushed in Iraq. He also shares the remarkable story of his road to recovery—a story defined by courage, perseverance, and an unyielding spirit.
Today, Derek continues to exemplify resilience not only through his own healing but also in his service to others as a mental health manager. Since joining WWIA in 2010, he has faithfully led events across the United States and Canada, guiding fellow combat-wounded Veterans toward hope, connection, and restoration.
Beyond his service, Derek is a devoted husband to his Canadian sweetheart, Andrea, a proud father of four, and a newly celebrated grandfather. When he’s not serving others, you can find him enjoying the great outdoors—traveling, hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing with family and friends.
This episode is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the healing power of service, camaraderie, and the great outdoors.
